Electoral Roll
To vote in various elections, you must be registered on the electoral roll. For 18-year-olds and for French citizens who obtained French nationality after 2018, registration is automatic under certain conditions. If you are in another situation (moving, a European citizen residing in France, registering for the first time, etc.), you must submit a registration application.
Under the law of August 1, 2016, the registration process has been simplified since January 1, 2019. You can apply to register throughout the year, but a minimum period of time is required before each election.
A French citizen reaching the age of 18 is automatically registered on the electoral roll if they completed the registration formalities at the age of 16. If this is not the case, they can submit a registration application.
To be eligible to vote, you must:
Be 18 years old on the day before election day
Be a French national or a national of a European Union member state
Be eligible to vote in France or in your country of origin (an EU member state)
Prove your affiliation with the municipality where you are registered
Verify your registration
Since 2019, the Ministry of the Interior has implemented a single electoral roll management system managed by INSEE (French National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies), called the Registre Electoral Unique (REU). This platform allows voters to check their registration on the electoral rolls as well as their polling station number.
